Cutting off the catalogs
Catalogs are another source of clutter in family rooms. They can be fun to page through but if they are allowed to overstay their welcome they can contribute an enormous amount of clutter. Here is how to get a handle on catalogs:
1. Get a cardboard box. Every time a catalog comes in the mail toss it in the box.
2. After three weeks you will be amazed at how many catalogs have accumulated.
3. Take a look at what is coming into your home. Are there catalogs from a company you ordered from once, but won’t again? Are you getting catalogs for infant developmental toys when the kids are already in college?
4. Sort the catalogs into two piles. Will Order From and Won’t Order From.
5. Take the Won’t Order From pile, call the 800 numbers, and ask to be taken off the catalog list. It may take a couple of issues to stop but it will.
6. Take a close look at the Will Order From pile. How often do you really order? If it is pretty consistent, OK, let the catalogs continue. If not, get back on the phone and get yourself off of that list as well. All major retailers now have websites, and it’s easier to visit the site when you need something than have to recycle the catalog every month when you don’t.
7. See page 159, Strategies for Minimizing Junk Mail.
8. Always recycle magazines and catalogs.
